Hours:

  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays
  • Closed Sunday

Items can be retrieved at the front door of the library at 6014 South Datura Street.

Why is staff allowed inside the library but not the public?
Limited staff have access to the library at this time. Staff members are staying away from contaminated areas, and the building’s HVAC system is currently shut down. Once areas under remediation are isolated and the HVAC system can be turned back on, city officials anticipate allowing patrons back inside.

What areas were tested and what were the results?
Littleton retained the services of a third-party testing company, which tested library restrooms and ventilation systems. Tests were conducted on January 13, and results were provided to the city January 18. The tests showed levels of methamphetamine contamination exceeding state standards in three locations: the exhaust fans of the men’s and women’s restrooms on the main floor, and the gender-neutral restroom on the lower level.

Following the library’s closure, the City of Littleton ordered comprehensive testing of other surfaces, materials, and rooms in the library.

Second-round testing showed levels above state limits in an additional bathroom, and a mechanical equipment room connected to the HVAC system. Contamination was not found on books or soft surfaces like furniture.

Bemis Library Begins Curbside Service

Bemis Public Library will reopen for curbside pickup service Thursday, February 9. Patrons will be able to resume placing holds for library materials, and can pick them up at the front door.

The City of Littleton is working closely with contractors approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to remediate contamination in the library.

Following test results received January 18 showing methamphetamine contamination in three bathrooms, prompting the library’s closure, the City of Littleton ordered comprehensive testing of other surfaces, materials, and rooms in the library.

Second-round testing showed levels above state limits in an additional bathroom, and a mechanical equipment room connected to the HVAC system. Contamination was not found on books or soft surfaces like furniture.

Reopening Bemis Public Library is a top priority for the City of Littleton. Bemis Public Library’s devoted staff have implemented a variety of alternate programs and events off site for library patrons, and the library offers many digital materials and collections.

Further updates will be shared as information becomes available. The City of Littleton is eager to fully reopen Bemis Public library as soon as possible. Check BemisLibrary.org for the latest.
