English Resources for Volunteers and Students

The Littleton Immigrant Resources Center has two iPads that program volunteers may check out with a Bemis Library card. The iPads can be checked out at the library's Checkout desk for a maximum of two hours at a time and are library-use only. 

The iPads have apps and links to websites to help students study for their naturalization exam. Included apps can be found below.

Learning Chocolate – Learn and practice English vocabulary.

Literacy Minnesota – Fantastic resource for tutors and volunteers to learn how to teach English more effectively. Register for training sessions, or watch videos anytime.

Mango Languages - Audio lessons with opportunity to listen to a native English speaker and then record yourself speaking. Over 70 languages to choose from plus English as a second language courses. You will need your Bemis Library card to access this site. Register for a library card today!

Intercambio Resources - provides video supplements for the Pronunciation Fun video and listening tracks for the Intercambio curriculum

Intercambio Teachers' Blog - Provides teaching tips for ESL tutors.

Woodward English - Free English lessons on many different topics.

Smart Phone Apps

Duolingo - Free smart phone app. Uses a variety of matching, writing, flashcard, and self-recording games to teach language. Students can set daily practice goals and track their progress.

Quizlet - Free smart phone app. Students can download study materials for a variety of topics, including English and US Citizenship. Teachers can assign flashcards, quizzes, and much more.

These training modules are designed to provide volunteers with a basic understanding of adult second language acquisition and the naturalization process, including the interview and test. This training is good for the new Citizenship Mentor who is unfamiliar with the naturalization process or a returning mentor who would like to refresh his or her memory. This easy-to-use, free learning portal provides ESOL practitioners with unlimited access to high quality online professional development and learning opportunities. This is for those Citizenship and Language Partner Mentors who would like further professional development in teaching. This course has several different modules/lessons and participants may print a Certificate of Completion after they finish a module.
